Rich, smoky, and slightly sweet, baked beans with bacon are a comforting classic side dish perfect for BBQs, potlucks, or cozy family dinners. Slow-baked to perfection, the flavors deepen as the beans absorb the savory bacon, brown sugar, and tangy sauce.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: Serves: 6–8 people

Ingredients

6 slices bacon, chopped

1 small onion, finely diced

2 cans (15 oz each) navy beans or pork & beans, drained slightly

1/2 cup ketchup

1/4 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons molasses

1 tablespoon yellow mustard

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a skillet over medium heat, cook chopped bacon until crispy. Remove and set aside, leaving a little grease in the pan.

Add diced onion to the skillet and sauté until soft and translucent (about 3–4 minutes).

In a large mixing bowl, combine beans, cooked bacon, onions, ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

Transfer mixture to a baking dish.

Bake uncovered for 45–60 minutes, until thickened and bubbly.

Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

💡 Cooking Tips

  • For deeper flavor, cook low and slow—extend bake time up to 90 minutes if needed.
  • Use thick-cut bacon for extra texture and smokiness.
  • Add a splash of apple cider vinegar for a subtle tangy kick.
  • Stir halfway through baking if you want a more even consistency.

🔄 Variations

  • Spicy Kick: Add diced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Meaty Upgrade: Mix in cooked ground beef or sausage.
  • Maple Twist: Replace brown sugar with maple syrup for a sweeter profile.
  • Vegetarian Version: Skip bacon and add smoked paprika or liquid smoke for flavor.
  • BBQ Style: Stir in your favorite barbecue sauce for a richer, smoky taste.
