Classic Cheeseburger

Classic Cheeseburger

Juicy, flame-kissed beef patties topped with melted cheese and tucked into a toasted bun—this classic cheeseburger delivers simple, nostalgic flavor that never goes out of style. Perfect for weeknight dinners, backyard cookouts, or game day.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 4 slices cheddar or American cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns

  • 1 tbsp butter or oil (for toasting buns)
  • Classic Toppings (optional):
    • Lettuce leaves
    • Tomato slices
    • Onion slices (raw or grilled)
    • Pickles
    • Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise

Instructions

  • Form the Patties:
Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions. Gently shape into patties slightly wider than the buns. Press a small dimple in the center of each patty to prevent puffing.

  • Season:
Season both sides with salt and pepper just before cooking.

  • Cook the Patties:
Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3–4 minutes per side, flipping once.

  • Add Cheese:
During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and cover briefly until melted.

  • Toast the Buns:
Lightly butter the buns and toast cut-side down until golden.

  • Assemble:
Place patties on buns and add desired toppings and condiments. Serve immediately.

Notes

Cooking Tips

  • Don’t overwork the meat—gentle handling keeps burgers tender.

  • Let patties rest for 1–2 minutes after cooking to retain juices.

  • Use freshly ground beef for the best flavor and texture.

Variations

  • Smash Burger: Press patties thin on a hot griddle for crispy edges.

  • Bacon Cheeseburger: Add crispy bacon slices before serving.

  • Spicy Cheeseburger: Mix a pinch of cayenne into the beef or add jalapeños.

  • Gourmet Style: Swap buns for brioche and add caramelized onions or aioli.

  • Lean Option: Use 90/10 beef or ground turkey with added olive oil for moisture.
