Chili Cheeseburger

A bold, comfort-food classic featuring a juicy beef patty topped with melty cheese and hearty chili, all tucked into a toasted bun. This chili cheeseburger is messy, satisfying, and perfect for game days or weeknight cravings.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

For the Burgers

1 1/2 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)

Salt and black pepper, to taste

4 burger buns (brioche or sesame)

4 slices cheddar or American cheese

Butter or oil, for toasting buns

For the Chili Topping

1 cup beef chili (homemade or quality canned)

1/4 tsp chili powder (optional, for extra heat)

1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional)

Optional Toppings

Diced onions

Jalapeño slices

Sour cream

Pickles

Instructions

Form the Patties: Divide ground beef into 4 equal patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.

Cook the Burgers: Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until desired doneness.

Melt the Cheese: Place cheese slices on patties during the last minute of cooking; cover briefly to melt.

Warm the Chili: Heat chili in a small saucepan over medium heat until hot.

Toast the Buns: Lightly butter buns and toast until golden.

Assemble: Place burger patty on bottom bun, spoon chili generously over the top, add optional toppings, and finish with the top bun. Serve immediately.

Notes

Cooking Tips

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for maximum juiciness.

  • Don’t press the patties while cooking—this keeps them juicy.

  • For extra flavor, toast buns in the burger drippings.

  • Thicker chili works best to avoid soggy buns.

Variations

  • Bacon Chili Cheeseburger: Add crispy bacon strips under the chili.

  • Spicy Version: Use pepper jack cheese and spicy chili.

  • Turkey Chili Cheeseburger: Swap beef for turkey patties and turkey chili.

  • Low-Carb Option: Serve in lettuce wraps instead of buns.

  • BBQ Chili Cheeseburger: Mix a tablespoon of BBQ sauce into the chili before topping
